Environment

Global climate change has already had observable effects on the environment. Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted and trees are flowering sooner. Beyond climate change, government can impact the environment in a variety of ways including regulations on emissions, water use, recycling, renewable energy, and protections on land and animals.

Mayor - may enact restrictions on recycling, water use and conservation.

State Legislator - State Senator or Congressperson creates laws governing many environmental impact issues including the outlawing of single use plastic bags, the requirement for environmental review of certain projects, recycling regulation, and conservation.

Governor - sign executive orders that can have an environmental impact such as restricting the sale fo gas powered cars, reducing emissions from manufacturing and designations lands for conservation

Federal Legislator - US Senator or Congressperson creates statutes that empower the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate and enforce restrictions on companies such as the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act.

President - nominates the Administrator of the EPA, who is then confirmed by the Senate

ABOUT US >

WhoMakesChange.org was created to provide information about which decision-makers in government impact the important issues of today to empower young voters to make choices and have their voices heard. State and local elected officials have the power to enact change on many issues.  Your vote in these local elections is what will drive change.  Turnout for local elections tends to be much lower than federal elections even though local officials are often the ones who have the greatest impact on your life.
